Fabrics With Jenny : What is Soft Shell Fabric?

Hello Stitchers!

Very often I find that customers come into the shop and admire the lovely soft shell fabrics, but are uncertain to how they are used and what they are for.

Hopefully this blog will answer those questions if you're curious about soft shell too!

What is Soft Shell Fabric?

Soft shell fabric is a versatile material used primarily in outdoor clothing, such as jackets, pants and accessories such as dog coats.

It is designed to provide a balance between protection from the elements and keeping you warm. Typically, soft shell fabric has a woven outer layer that is water-resistant or water-repellent, and a soft fleece inner layer.

It is not fully waterproof - you couldn't stay out all day in the torrential rain for example, but it will definitely keep a shower off if you're popping out to run some errands.

Cutting Out Soft Shell Fabric

Use sharp tools - soft shell fabric is thicker and more durable than regular fabrics, so ensure your scissors or rotary cutter is sharp to get clean, straight cuts.

Try to avoid pins - Instead of pinning your pattern to the fabric, use pattern weights or clips. Pins can leave holes in the fabric, compromising its water resistance.

Which Needle Should I Use For Soft Shell?

A sharp needle should be used when sewing soft shell, we would recommend either a universal or a microtex needle to make sure that the perforations are crisp and clean.

What is the best thread for sewing soft shell?

Opt for a strong, polyester thread that can withstand outdoor conditions and won’t break easily - Gutermann Sew All 100m is perfect for the job.

For all of our soft shell fabrics here in the shop, you can find the recommended threads with the best shade match listed alongside the fabric. We do the hard work for you!

Sewing Tips For Soft Shell

  • Stitch Length - Use a longer stitch length (3.0–3.5 mm) to avoid perforating the fabric too much, which could weaken it or reduce its water resistance.

  • Go Slow - Take your time, unpicking stitches does leave holes that won't repair themselves, so it's best to go carefully!

  • Pressing - Keep the iron temperature low, use a press cloth and definitely test a swatch before pressing your finished garment, you don't want to cause any damage!

  • Seam Finishing - Soft shell fabric doesn’t fray when cut, so technically doesn't need a seam finish. However, if you have access to one, finishing your seams with an overlocker can give a professional look.
